This month's selection is: a description of a lady in literature
(You can read more in Heidi's post here.)
In case my post title didn't tip you off, my selection comes from Louisa May Alcott's Little Women. So please, enjoy her jolly introduction of Jo.
Thanks, Heidi! It was a wonderful idea for a selection.

Cordy

| Hehehe, this is a funny scene! :) |
" Fifteen-year-old Jo was very tall, thin, and brown, and reminded one of a colt; for she never seemed to know what to do with her long limbs, which were very much in her way. She had a decided mouth, a comical nose, and sharp, gray eyes, which appeared to see everything, and were by turns fierce, funny, or thoughtful. Her long, thick hair was her one beauty; but it was usually bundled into a net, to be out of her way. Round shoulders had Jo, big hands and feet, a flyaway look to her clothes, and the uncomfortable appearance of a girl who was rapidly shooting up into a woman, and didn't like it."
Thanks, Heidi! It was a wonderful idea for a selection.
Yours truly,
Cordy

I love Little Women and Jo is my favorite character in the story! :)
ReplyDeleteI love Jo too!
DeleteOoooh! I LOVE Little Women! Excellent choice, Cordy!!! :D
ReplyDeleteHahaha! I would have never guessed, Miss March!! ;D
DeleteI love Jo!!! And this description is simply wonderful. I have always savoured this description of her when I read the book, picturing what she must look like. Louisa May Alcott paints a picture of her so well in so few words!
ReplyDeleteSO true! Personally, I wish I was better at descriptions. But, you know what they say, practice makes perfect!
DeleteI've always loved how Alcott describes Jo :) So clever!
ReplyDeleteIt so perfectly describes Jo! It's like you know her after only reading that little snippet about her.
DeleteJune Allyson was such a wonderful Jo wasn't she?
ReplyDeleteI've just finished reading the whole LW series (again!) and I'd love to watch all three movies again too....
Another June Allyson fan! Or maybe you just like her as Jo. Either way, I did like June Allyson's Jo!
DeleteI wish I was more interested in the other books. I just can't ever 'get into them'. I can say that I REALLY like Little Women!!
Jo has always been my favorite March, and this description of her gives you so many hints of what sorts of things will happen in her story, doesn't it? Good selection!
ReplyDeleteI agree! It is a good, almost foreshadowing, passage. Is that what you meant?
DeleteJo is the best. To me, she has always been the most relatable.
Yes, that's what I meant. Those adjectives especially -- decided, comical, and sharp. And that last bit about looking like she's turning into a woman and doesn't want to -- that's so huge with Jo's whole arc.
DeleteI've always loved Jo best because I relate to her so strongly, so I was kind of shocked when I lead a LW read-along last year and discovered that lots of people liked one or another of the other characters better instead! Hee.
I feel the same way. I am Jo, through and through, and it surprises me when others relate to one of the other girls. Haha.
DeleteI love Alcott's introductory description of Jo! And she tells so much (about appearance, character, etc.) in so few words... It's amazing.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you decided to join in this month and so happy you thought of her! ;D
I know! I wish I had that talent! But alas, I DO NOT. :D
DeleteThanks for the welcome! :)
Aww, Jo! This is a great selection! :D
ReplyDeleteThanks, Natalie. :)
DeleteOooh, I remember this part! Good choice! :D
ReplyDeleteThanks!
DeleteI think Jo would have been such a hoot to hang out with. The picture these words draw of her are perfect - you can just see her before you.
ReplyDeleteYes, agreed! She would have been so much fun...so long as you didn't interrupt her writing. ;D
