*Quick Warning*
For any of you who haven't seen Rogue One, you might want to skip this post
Bodhi Rook is overlooked in the grand scheme of Rogue One. However, as someone who watches for the outsiders in movies, he's just the character I look for. Bodhi Rook first gains our attention because he is an empire pilot who has defected in the hope of helping the resistance. But... his actions aren't seen in a very welcoming light at first and before his worth is realized he is put through the wringer. He tries and tries to share his information and every time, he is shut down. But it still doesn't stop him. Every time he is denied or ignored, he waits for his next chance. He goes so far as to endure torture and still keeps fighting to help. This constant struggle for him was what drew my attention.
A human's natural reaction to being ignored and badly treated is usually to return the favor. That has something to do with pride or something like that. ;) This man could have turned his back and changed his mind so many times. I mean, in his mind, the good guys were torturing him and were refusing to believe him. I don't know about you but that would bother my brain a little bit. The normal, and I'd add understandable, reaction would have been to listen to his pride and shut up after a time. Bodhi defies that stereotype. He continues to fight to be heard and trusted because he knows that what he has to offer is more important than what is being taken from him.
So, in short, don't underestimate this pilot guy. He's actually a really terrific well rounded and truly good character. (And he did give the movie its title. Just sayin'. Haha.)
Yours truly,
Cordy
P.S. An update post on me is coming, when I can collect the time. I have been rather busy of late... Anyway, must be dashing!

I love Bodhi Rook! Not as much as I love Cassian, but possibly as much as I love Jyn and K-2SO. Like you say, Bodhi is one determined dude. I love how tenaciously he clings to honoring his promise to Galen.
ReplyDeleteAgreed. I just didn't have time to cover Cassian and Jyn, and they seem to receive most of the attention so I postponed their posts.
DeleteHis determination is admirable! And you can't help but root for him!
YES!!! I dearly loved Bodhi in the film, and yes, he was a very understated character :).
ReplyDeleteWonderful post, Cordy!

DeleteMe, too! I'm actually amazed at how much I like it.
Yes! In Rogue One I actually didn't love Jyn and Cassian, but I loved all of the other characters! I think if I watch this again he would become even more of a favorite!
ReplyDeleteI still rather like Jyn and Cassian but Bodhi is certainly worth a re-watch. :)
