Every once in awhile I will read Pride and Prejudice to my mom until she goes to sleep or until our conversation keeps us up to late. (Yes, sleeping isn't always involved. ;)) Anyway, we noticed a few missing scenes as I was reading to her the other night and I just wanted to share our imaginings with you.
As we strolled the garden with Lizzy and Lady Catherine we learned of the alarming report Lady Catherine had received. In thinking of this scene my mom and I imagined that, as the book suggests, if Mr. Collins was in attendance when Lady Catherine heard of the "intended engagement of her nephew" the gentleman would begin to apologize for his shortcomings in not marrying his poor young cousin so that such a circumstance would be impossible. He would, of course, have the good manners not to blame his dear Charlotte. Can you even imagine such a scene?! That would have been hilarious to witness. Concluding the visit hastily the great lady would begin planning her trek to Meryton and the gentleman would scurry home to write Mr. Bennet.
Now fast forward to the scene that is also alluded to in the book where Lady Catherine confronts Mr. Darcy about the rumor. Am I the only one who wants to SEE this scene?! That would have been fantastic. Mr. Darcy would be positioned at a window while Lady Catherine would rant and rave about her meeting with Elizabeth. She'd be determined to make Darcy understand how unreasonable the young lady had been and how presumptuous she was. Darcy would be listening and as he learned of Lizzy's reaction he might allow himself a smile of admiration or pride before setting off for Meryton. Perhaps even leaving Lady Catherine in mid-sentence. OOOHHH, that scene would have been glorious!!! :D Wouldn't you agree?
Well, I must be off. Do consider reading Pride and Prejudice sometime soon.
Yours truly,
Cordy

Don't misunderstand my moderating. I am trying to contain and avoid unsavory comments and spammers. This does not include those who disagree with me, only those that are unable to state their disagreement agreeably. I have already said that I would enjoy different opinions.

Right?! Ahhh, they would have been awesome!! Haha.
DeleteLOVE THIS.
ReplyDeleteThanks! :D
DeleteSometimes I think Mr. Collins is my favorite character. My sisters and I were talking about how hilariously awful he was, especially when he comes to "condole" about Lydia. "The death of your sister would have been preferable" is priceless.
ReplyDeleteThe first scene is spot on. But I received the impression that Lady Catherine wrote to Darcy? Whatever it was I do know the book mentioned them breaking off, no wait. That was after the marriage was certain. THAT would be another awesome scene.
He is a one of a kind--something, isn't he? (I can't find the right word for him.) He's just awful! Haha. His lack of tact is incredible.
DeleteOh, you should go find the section and read it because as I recall she actually went straight on to London from Longbourn to confront her nephew. The grand lady did not waste any time. *Cordy hurries to her bookshelf so she can give a reference* Okay, it is mentioned, rather humorously I might add, a paragraph or two after Darcy's second proposal.
While it's true that a breaking off did happen, I actually like that a reconciliation is mentioned and takes place because of LIZZY'S efforts. The grand lady was brought around in spite of herself. Haha.
YES. This is so perfect!!
ReplyDeleteIndeed!
DeleteI definitely want to see the scene where Lady Catherine rants to Mr. Darcy! I think you have pictured it perfectly!
ReplyDeleteHaha, thank you!
DeleteWow, yes. That last one especially. From your description I can totally imagine it!! That would have been SUCH a fun scene. :)

SO FUN! And they missed their chance! *HUGE SIGH*
DeleteAww, thanks.
Yesssss I wish we had the Darcy vs. Lady Catherine scene SO MUCH. :D
ReplyDeleteCertainly, if we had to choose between one or the other, I think we all know which one we'd want them to spend their time on! :D
