Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken {Chick-Flick}

Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken is a little known, at least in my experience, Disney movie from the 90s. Growing up my sister and I always called it the Diving Girl movie. (I never paid attention to the bold lettering on the VHS tape because I didn't need too. I knew what the cover looked like and I would pop it in.) Now, when I think of summer movies, I naturally link summer with chick-flicks. So, I want to share my favorite chick-flick with you. (It has horses, have I ever mentioned how much I like horses? If not, I really do, and I wonder how much this movie has influenced that love. Hmmm.)

Judging from the poll on my sidebar, not many of you have seen it--yah!! I was kind of hoping you didn't. Why?? So that I can give really good teasers of course!! This is Cordy, you think you'd know that about me by now. ;D So without further ado, I will continue...

Meet, Sonora Webster:

In Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken, Sonora Webster, is an orphan that wants to do something with her life. So, she runs away from her less than ideal home in the hopes of becoming a Diving Girl for Dr. Carver. (That happens in the first tenish minutes of the film so no, I didn't spoil anything.) What is this dream job? Well, it's making a motion mount on a horse a few feet before the horse plunges 30-40ish feet into a pool of water. Instead of securing this dream job Sonora begins working as a stable hand for the act.

Soon, with the help of the owner's son, Al, (trust me, you will all liiiike Al ;)) Sonora takes on the training of a horse of her own to try and prove her abilities and determination to Dr. Carver.

Luck is on her side when the star of the show suffers a slight mishap that leaves her unable, for a time, to make the jump herself.

Along the way you will meet Clifford, the perfect blend of sidekick and wingman. He'll do it all. :) (And frustratingly enough, there are no pictures of Clifford online. What is up with that? Remember what I said about the film being something of an unknown?)

Also, I love watching the relationship develop between father and son in this film. Dr. Carver is a hard businessman which often overcomes whatever tender feelings he might have for his son or anyone around him. Because of this and his contempt for Al, he and his son struggle with having a father and son bond at all. But through the film you get to watch the stages of respect and then love come through.

Now that, is an outfit. Wow.

Woven into the story is a high-maintenance 'star', the taciturn complicated show owner Dr. Carver, Clifford of course, wonderful sets/costumes, horses (!), a monstrous hilarious wardrobe and hairdo misdeed and yes, a scene with a swing. (It's super cute!!) And if that picture isn't a teaser I don't now what is.

The film is clean when it come to language or any inappropriate content.

You might think I have revealed everything there is to know about this story...I haven't! I wouldn't do that to you. It's a story of determination and overcoming obstacles placed in our way. It also just so happens it throws in some romance to make it more enjoyable at the same time. ;D

Hope you're all enjoying your summer! (Mine is seriously hot :P) Consider getting some of your girlfriends together for a movie day! You won't regret this pick!

Your truly,
Cordy

    1. I just watched this the other day. It was really cute! I love that it was set in the 1930's. (And yes, cough, I did love Al. ;))
The only thing that I found odd was the romance between Al and Sonora. Toward the end of the film it was more natural, but at the beginning...she seemed so young!! It was just...mildly creepy. haha But, overall I did enjoy it, and I would probably watch it again. :)

      ps. I loved Clifford!

    2. You're not the first to question Al and Sonora as a pair. Haha. I think for me, I 'get it' because I've grown up watching it so I know what to look for and see the change that comes over Al because of Sonora. But I understand your feelings. :D Haha, isn't Clifford the best?! He's great!! :D

  7. Because of your lovely review, I went and found this movie on Youtube, and I watched it. I was surprised at how much I liked it. Going into it, I wasn't sure what to expect, but it was very good. I especially liked Sonora. She was a very brave girl with a lot of spirit, I thought. I also liked Doctor Foster a lot :) As for Al . . . well, at least he did improve. He definitely wasn't my favorite guy or anything like that, but in the end I kinda liked him. The beginning, though, he was annoying, because I felt that at first he didn't really care for Sonora, he just looked on her as another girl to kiss. Does that make sense? Anyway, on the whole I enjoyed this movie a lot, so thanks for bringing it to my attention!

    1. I'm glad you warmed up to it in the end.

I can see, watching it for the first time, how Al might seem that way. However, when you have watched it several times, (like me--oops ;)), you notice the little parts of his behavior that change because of Sonora. You know he's sincere in his affection for her when he keeps his word and writes her letters. If she really was just another girl to him--he wouldn't have taken the time to keep in touch. Particularly, when she wasn't writing back. But yes, I can see why you might be a little skeptical of Al. :)

Haha, what did you think of Clifford?

    2. I did see how he began to change in his attitude towards her, once he had left. But it was before that, when he was leading her on, swimming with her and kissing her and so on, that I felt that he didn't really care for HER, and that was wrong. She was so young, and wouldn't have understood or thought about that. She trusted him, if you know what I mean.

Heehee. Well, Clifford was kind of cute, you know. Since he was more Sonora's age, I was kind of hoping that they would have developed a relationship between him and her instead of with Al, but it was not to be :P

    3. I can see what your thinking, but I disagree. Haha, mostly because I have watched it so many times so I know what to look for when it comes to Al and his character and his feelings for Sonora. I'm CLEARLY bias. ;D

Ha! I just think Clifford was a great friend character. I'd want to hang out and get into trouble with him. That and defy death, I would totally want to defy death with him. Hehehe.

    4. Heehee, yeah, there are things that I'm biased on, too :) Btw, I love your new header and background! REALLY PRETTY!!

P.S. I'm almost done with the editing! So don't worry. The email is coming shortly!

    5. Haha, it happens. *guilty shrug*

Thanks! I'm still trying to work out my sidebar though. I don't approve of it yet.

P.S. Thanks! I'll be on the lookout. :D

    1. Cute. I always liked Sonora's hair once she figured out how to style it. But when she first cuts it O_O I always felt horrible for her!

  9. Awww! I've seen the cover of this movie at random times throughout the years, and it's always looked intriguing, but I never looked into it further. Now, however, I'm thinking that'll have to change ;) Awesome review! You definitely sparked my interest. And Sonora looks adorable and beautiful at the same time :D
