Okay... ;D
When I was six-ish, I think I experienced my first thunder and lightning storm of memory. At the time, I was sharing a room with my sister at the back corner of our house. My parents were way down at the other end of the hallway! What a terribly long distance, wouldn't you agree? ;) Anyway, I watched the lightning flash with continually building fear as it lit our room again and again. My older sister remained asleep, very helpful... In my panic I just wanted to get to my parent's room where I knew I would be safe. But my mind was as active then as it is today and because of that little troublesome brain, I knew for absolute fact that if I ran across my room when the lightning struck and lit the room, that I would be struck dead on the spot! I remember being so sad because I was much to young to die. Haha. So I prayed. It's actually one of my earliest memories of praying with a special cause in mind. Heavenly Father must have smiled lovingly down on His frightened girl of six as she pleaded for her life. Even after the prayer it took me a time to build up my courage to race across the room because when there wasn't lightning, there was thunder! Well, dear reader, I survived! Haha. Yes, indeed. In a moment of enthusiastic courage I leapt from my bed and sped out of my room, down the fortunately windowless hall and arrived unharmed in my parent's room.
This next story takes place several years later. I'm in my early teens somewhere, or maybe my mid-teens, I just can't be sure. Well, it's another thunder stuffed night but this time I'm asleep. Or at least I was sleeping until a very overzealous clap startled me from sleep in time to knock my head on the roof. (I was again sleeping at one end of the house, only this house had a gable to it. The gable had never bothered me until that night.) I fell back on my pillow with a laugh. This happenstance helped me understand that when people are startled from sleep, they can sit right up in bed. Up to this point, I didn't think that was realistic. Haha. Thankfully, no bruising occurred! :D
This last story, assuming you have continued reading to the end, is the most recent. It happened four or five years ago. I was at the yearly girl's camp that my church plans and it was raining cats and dogs. As we were up in the mountains we were getting pounded! It had been like this for hours, having started in the late afternoon and continued into the evening. Some people, one of my friends being one of them, (she is the deepest sleeper that I know), was able to sleep through the thunder. I wasn't. About the time the thunder got to ground shaking level I knew I wouldn't be able to go to sleep. I wasn't really tired either because it was really, a once in a lifetime experience to be lying on ground that was shaking from the power of thunder. But eventually, I remembered the book I had brought up to camp. Pride and Prejudice in fact. :D I had settled in just fine, I was arguing with Lady Catherine (!) (perfect scene for an angry thunderstorm), flashlight in hand, when I hear from across the tent,
"Cordy, what are you doing?" my bosom friend called.
"Oops, did I wake you?" I answered, punching the light off.
"You're kidding?" She said, referring to the thunder. "What are you reading?"
I told her and the two of us laughed.
Eventually, I returned to my reading and didn't lay down until the thunder eased, it didn't stop entirely, but it did ease up.
Obviously, I have never forgotten that thunder. It was really an incredible experience! :)
Do you have any particularly rainy stories?
Or perhaps you have a favorite rainy scene from fiction?
Yours truly,
Cordy

I loved this! I actually love rain. We had a bunch of rain last week and then we had a glorious rainbow! I loved reading your stories. :)
ReplyDeleteI don't have many memories of rain--but I do have some. And they're mostly of rain at Girl's Camp (what do you know?), because then it's actually memorable because it affects everything. Like the yearlings' tents all got flooded one year (they didn't know the tarps were supposed to go UNDER the tent...). And the tent I slept in got flooded one year. It has rained unfailingly every year I've been. It doesn't rain any other week of the summer, of course, but it rains that week. Oh, yes. Must give the yearlings their experience with rain. Haha.
One other awesome experience with rain--It was during Chemistry (ugh) and it started raining. It was probably April or May, because it was warm. And I had this urge to just run outside and dance in the rain--and I did, because I homeschool so I can just do things like that. :)
Haha, thanks.
DeleteExactly! I never had a Girl's Camp without rain! Isn't that strange? Thankfully, my tent never flooded.
How lovely. :) I ran through the rain to get the mail today...does that count? ;)
Lucky you for not getting your tent flooded! :)
DeleteIf you enjoyed going running through the rain that's what matters. :)
Yes, I did enjoy it! :D
DeleteAw, what nice memories you have! The first one sounds like something I would have done when I was younger.
ReplyDeleteOne of my favorite memories is when we were in Europe. It rained so hard and the wind was really strong. The wind kept blowing rain on our backs and it was so cold! When we finally got to the car, we dried ourselves off with toilet paper because it was a rental and we didn't want to get the seats wet XD
It was fun though. Luckily we had a couple of umbrellas but it was hilarious to see other tourists wearing plastic bags on their heads beause they were unprepared :D
You've been to Europe?! COOL!! :D Where did you go?
DeleteHaha, nothing like a toilet paper. ;D
We went to Italy and France :D
DeleteYep, it's good stuff. I'm so glad we had some! Now we always leave towels in the car XD
LUCKY DUCK!!! I'm so jealous!
DeleteHaha, indeed. Toilet paper is all fine and good, but sometimes, a towel is better! Haha.
These were sweet, Cordy. Your poor little six-year-old self--thinking you'd be struck dead on the spot. Awwww. I'm glad you made it safely to your parents room. :)
ReplyDeleteHaha. You know, I've probably thought the same thing about the whole sitting up in bed when you're scared thing. But now I know the truth. It CAN happen. ;) (Poor Cordy, though. These rain stories are not very comfortable for you.)
The ground was actually shaking? Wow. Good thing you had Lady Catherine to argue with! :D (Isn't it so cozy reading books at night with a flashlight?)
Oh, dear. I would try and think of a story for you, but what I really need to be doing is sweeping my room, so I guess I'd better cut this short. ;) Duty calls! Haha.
Thanks for the post, Cordy!
~Miss March
Haha, me too, Miss March! :D
Delete:D Haha, but like I said, I did fall back down on my pillow laughing! And it was lucky that there wasn't any bruising, so I mustn't have hit my head very hard. And yes, I am here to tell you that it can happen! Haha.
Yup! It was crazy fun! And I do like using a flashlight to read by. :) It is remarkably cozy! :)
"Well, if we must we must." (Do you have hardwood floors in your room? Aren't they cold in the morning?!)
Thank you for your comment, Miss March!!
~Cordy
No, actually, my bedroom is carpeted. I guess what I really should have said was that I need to "vacuum" my room not "sweep" it. Heehee. I've always used the word "sweep" instead of "vacuum" (not sure why), so I forgot when I was commenting that that's not technically the right word. ;)
DeleteOh, now I understand. I use words that aren't 'technically correct' too. Haha, I was just worried for your potentially cold feet. Wood floor would make for a very rude awakening for them in the morning, don't you think? :)
DeleteYes, indeed it would. I like carpeted floors much better. :D
DeleteThese are such cool stories!! I love the one of you as a little girl. It's so sweet that you prayed for safety. :) I'm sure God loved that moment!
ReplyDeleteMy own story concerning a thunder storm would be my thirteenth birthday party. We had some relatives over, and a storm started up. The grownups were standing around talking when suddenly thunder cracked and the picture over our fireplace flew off the wall! It turns out our chimney had been struck by lightening. A couple things got broken, and we had some problems with our electricity, but thankfully no one was hurt. I was such a crazy experience. I'll certainly never forget that birthday! :D
Thanks! :)
DeleteNO WAY!! That would have been terrifying in the moment! Great bragging rights later on though, "what's a random thing that has happened to you?" "Oh, my fireplace was struck my lightning...no big deal". Haha. I'm glad no one was hurt!
Hahaha, I know, right? It's definitely a fun story to tell people. :)
DeleteRain, rain, go away . . . I loved your stories! My scariest memories of rain are during all those nights that we had to wake up because of tornadoes. We'd go hide in the closet, and the rain would come down in sheets while the thunder crashed and lightening sliced through the sky. Frightening, I can tell you. But we've never had a tornado hit us, though they have come pretty close, like, down the street close :)
ReplyDeleteWhen I was younger and we lived in one corner of tornado country, we had to run to our basement for tornado warnings. One night, the alarm sounded and some of the neighbor girls were nearer our house so they ran to our basement and we were near their house so we ran with their parents down to their basement. When the alarm stopped we were able to switch houses for the night. I hated that alarm sound when I was younger. But in all the time we lived there, never, did the twister touchdown were we could see it. You had one down the street?! 0_0 YIKES!!
DeleteI loved this, Cordy! Rain can create so many memories and moods. (I always kinda feel like an Austen heroine when it's raining out.;)) Your screen caps are all so perfect, by the way.
ReplyDeleteI was TERRIFIED of thunderstorms as a little girl, especially at night. I always wanted to be with my parents, of course. But then, that awful moment before you dashed! What if something HAPPENED?!?
Another memory is when from I was about 9. The weather was perfectly normal, and then suddenly out of the blue came the LOUDEST thunderclap I'd ever heard. I screamed super loud and RAN to where my mother was. (So much for the carefully cultivated dignity I'd thought I had.:))
"I remember being so sad because I was much too young to die." This isn't rain related, but I remember feeling that way too at six. I'd been helping my mom around the house a lot that day, and then it struck my little brain--I was being good and GOOD PEOPLE DIED YOUNG. I got quite depressed, because I really believed I would die the next day. The crazy things you think at that age!
I've said it before, but I love your blog, dear! I really enjoy getting to know you, and seeing a new post makes my day.
~Rilla Blythe
Thank you, Rilla!! Rain is really good at that, I agree. Haha, it's funny you say that because I actually thought of including a picture of Marianne but decided on Molly instead.
DeleteRIGHT?! It's horrible! ;D
"(So much for the carefully cultivated dignity I'd thought I had.:))" HAHA! That made me laugh! I know this might sound...odd, but I wished I screamed when I was scared. I freeze. That, in my opinion, is a very boring reaction. :/
Imaginations can be very active little machines, can they not?! Hehehe. I'm glad that you survived!
Ooh, thank you so very much, Rilla! That is so encouraging to read! Now you've returned the favor and made my day! (Or more evening, I guess. ;))
