The Scarlet Pimpernel Dream Cast

Okay, so, never have I ever put together a 'dream cast' for something. Until last week. I just finished reading The Scarlet Pimpernel for the second time and I was reminded of how much I want a movie based entirely on the one book! I know that Anthony Andrews is a fabulous Sir Percy. HOWEVER, the book is fantastic as a stand alone! It doesn't need all the added extras from other books! And because of my visual tendencies, if I read a book that I really like, I want to see it in movie form. Unfortunately, that usually means I don't like the movie because the movie doesn't stick to the book. I will never understand that, if the book was successful, why change it for the movie? Don't mess with success, people!

Anyway, I was telling all of this to my sympathetic sister, who is also a member of the Sir Percy Fan League, (which consists of my sister and I (but feel free to join in!), when we started talking about getting another Scarlet Pimpernel movie. Well, let me tell you, we have saved a casting office some time for between my sister and I, I cast Sir Percy and she cast Marguerite, we have cast the two leads. Don't ask us about any other casting, we'll leave that to the casting office. We simply can't do all the work. ;) Therefore, I am here to present you, along with some stupendous descriptions straight from the text, our cast of The Scarlet Pimpernel in the hopes that in spreading the word, it might catch on and become reality. (Haha, become reality, who am I kidding?!) :P

**A Word on Spoilers** I don't think that I have included any excerpts that would qualify as "spoilers" but if you want to avoid even the slightest hint to the story line, skip the third paragraph.
"Sir Percy Blakeney, as the chronicles of the time inform us, was in this year of grace 1792, still a year or two on the right side of thirty. Tall, above the average, even for an Englishman, broad-shouldered and massively built, he would have been called unusually good-looking, but for a certain lazy expression in his deep-set blue eyes, and the perpetual inane laugh which seemed to disfigure his strong, clearly-cut mouth."
"Marguerite Blakeney was then scarcely five-and-twenty, and her beauty was at its most dazzling stage. The large hat, with its undulating and waving plumes, threw a soft shadow across the classic brow with the aureole of auburn hair—free at the moment from any powder; the sweet, almost childlike mouth, the straight chiselled nose, round chin, and delicate throat, all seemed set off by the picturesque costume of the period. The rich blue velvet robe moulded in its every line the graceful contour of the figure, whilst one tiny hand held, with a dignity all its own, the tall stick adorned with a large bunch of ribbons which fashionable ladies of the period had taken to carrying recently."
"She was so close to him that her soft, loose hair was wafted against his cheek; her eyes, glowing with tears, maddened him, the music in her voice sent fire through his veins. But he would not yield to the magic charm of this woman whom he had so deeply loved, and at whose hands his pride had suffered so bitterly. He closed his eyes to shut out the dainty vision of that sweet face, of that snow-white neck and graceful figure, round which the faint rosy light of dawn was just beginning to hover playfully."
I present Tom Hiddleston and Emma Watson.

Both of them are the right age and Emma's hair is almost perfect! Both individuals are extremely talented and now...
I. Want. It! Please?!!
This idea is to good to pass up! It would make for a stellar movie!

If you know any Scarlet Pimpernel lovers, do share this around so that I might find others to suffer with me. Haha!

*takes a deep breath to calm down*

OK, before you share, if you share, what do you think of the casting choices?

Yours truly,
Cordy

  1. It looks like it would work, but I haven't read The Scarlet Pimpernel. :| I guess it's pretty good? :)

    1. OOOH, YES! It's excellent, Kerry! Really!

I know you mentioned that you like Jane Austen and while I will say that it isn't Austen it has more of an Austen style than The Lord of the Rings. Haha! It's a wonderful mystery novel as well as romance. I HIGHLY recommend it! I should actually try and do a post on it sometime because it is superb!!
So yes, several exclamation points and gushing sentences later, I would call it a favorite. :D Haha.

I'll admit, I was skeptical when I saw the picture for the first time on my dashboard, but YOU HAVE CONVINCED ME. This should happen ;D

    1. Haha, what finally convinced you and what were you skeptical about?
I have to admit, it took me a day or two to agree with my sister about Emma Watson...but I never wavered about Tom Hiddleston. :D Haha.

  4. Well my sister and I have always wanted Benedict Cumberbatch and Sierra Boggess, but I think Tom would be SWELL too!! And we can give him blue eyes quite easily, he would be STUNNING with blue eyes!! Not that he isn't already stunning!! But Yeah, Emma isn't quite who I would choose. She doesn't have the stunning beauty of Marguerite.

    1. Hmm, I suppose I see Cumberbatch as a little to solemn for the role. I see Percy with his easy/obnoxious smile and that means Hiddleston. As for Sierra Boggess, I think she is a little too mature for the role, I mean, I like how Emma is younger like Marguerite. But Sierra is pretty. :)

  5. This is perfect!!!
What have you done? Now I can think of nothing than how much I want that casting! I haven't really seen anything with Emma Watson, but I'm sure she could do it. And Tom Hiddleston could play Sir Percy to perfection (though is there anything that man can't play?)

So lovely to meet a fellow TSP lover:)
If you want a movie based solely on the first book have you tried watching the 1936 version? It's quite good!

    1. I warned in the post that those who agreed with me would have to suffer along! Haha. Wouldn't it be amazing?!

I know, Tom Hiddleston is very talented. ;)

Haha, I have seen that version and I hope I don't offend you when I say that I laughed through it. My grandpa and I sat down to watch it and while I appreciated the accuracies of it, I still found it a little lacking. While I liked the Percy and Marguerite, I found the supporting cast left much to be desired. However that version des have it's good qualities! It's just...an updated version would be most welcome. :D

  6. I've never read the book(s), so I can't really approve or disapprove of this but I will say that the two actors would fit very nicely together! I am a big Emma Watson fan :)

      WHAT?!
Oh, Rosie! My dear friend, how have you missed it?!!
Well, if you have even the slightest idea that it might be intriguing--follow that instinct!! Pronto!! Haha.
The book is really well done and the more I read about those who have not read it, the more I am convinced that I will simply have to write a post on it...while avoiding spoilers, that is...hmmm.

Yes, I like Emma, too. Do you know her as a nerdy girl with bushy brown hair? :)

  7. I totally cast my vote for Tom Hiddleston as Sir Percy!! heehee :D

As for Emma Watson...I'm not sure. I've never seen her in anything, and I can't really picture her as Marguerite...maybe, though. :)

  8. Hold on, wait....you don't think Tom has blue eyes?? They seem blue to me in the photos I've seen of him.

    1. Hahaha, I'm laughing at myself right now. Okay, short story: I remember before I put this little collage together how I liked Tom's eyes but when I uploaded the image after I had edited it, I was like, "he has brown eye? Oh well." I forgot about the overlays and editing I added to the picture. :P Yes, Tom has blue eyes which means there really isn't anything lacking, except a contract, in his Sir Percy role. Haha. Sorry, Natalie! ;D

  9. "Don't ask us about any other casting, we'll leave that to the casting office. We simply can't do all the work. ;)" Haha. You're funny, Cordy. That line made me smile. Also this one, "do share this around so that I might find others to suffer with me." Your thoughtfulness and consideration are overwhelming. I just can't get over how kind it is of you to want to share your sufferings with us. ;) Heehee.

As to the casting, I really don't know what to say one way or the other. (I'm horrible when it comes to casting.) I think I'll just take your word for it. If you think Tom Hiddleston and Emma Watson would be a good choice...well then I do, too. :) (Heehee. It would be rather strange to see Emma Watson as someone other than Hermione. I just finished watching the Harry Potter movies for the first time this past week, and I'm currently reading the fourth book, so at the moment she's totally 'Hermione' to me. ;))

    1. Oh, thank you, Miss March. ;D I am trying to be as thoughtful as I can in this matter. ;P Haha.

Really?! Tsk, tsk...watching the movies before you've read the books. Just kidding, I've done that too. Well, you've watched my favorite Potter movie and you're already past my favorite Potter book. What did you think of the story after finishing the movies? You will have to keep me posted on your reading progress. :) Emma is an excellent Hermione!

    2. Oh, I know you are, Cordy. And it's awfully good of you. ;P

I know, I know. That is NOT the proper way to do things, but actually I'm glad I did it that way because then I was able to enjoy the movies without being annoyed by all the stuff they cut out. And the books are still very interesting even though I know what happens. (Actually, I knew a lot of what was going to happen when I watched the movies, too, because my sister was so kind as to give me just about ALL the spoilers beforehand. Heehee. ;))

What did I think of the story after finishing the movies? Oh, I liked it. There were, of course, some parts I could have done without, but I really liked the characters. They are so good. (Not the villains, of course. I'm not talking about them. Heehee.) And I'm very much enjoying the books now because they have so many more details that were not in the films. :)

Oh, really? Which is your favorite book and which is your favorite movie? My brother gets so annoyed at me because whenever he asks me which is my favorite I always answer, "I don't know. I like parts in all of them." Haha. I'm not very good at picking favorites.

    3. I never thought of it that way. Haha. Now the books will just fill the gaps instead of watching the movies afterwards and noticing all they left out. I know that the first time I read Pride and Prejudice, I was really thankful that I had watched the movie first so that I knew how they talked and things like that. Oh, how very considerate of your sister. ;) Haha. I kind of grew up with the Potter kids so the movies didn't start coming out until after the first few books had been released.

Naturally. Why are there always those "nose-wrinkle parts"? :P

My favorite book is Prisoner of Azkaban, and favorite movie is Order of the Phoenix. That battle in the Ministry(!), which is better in the book,--I just like when the Order arrives and you see the adults of the world actually flex their magic muscles. Haha, no worries. I guess I make myself pick favorites because when someone asks me I want to have quick answers so that I don't draw attention. Hehehe. In reality though, I can relate, I like little scenes and moments.

      Delete
    4. "Fill the gaps." Exactly. It's kind of nice that way. :)

Oh, you noticed those "nose-wrinkling" parts, too? Aren't they annoying, though? It would have been so easy to make those parts perfectly appropriate, and yet they just HAD to take them from a slightly wrong angle. Grrr.

Oooh! I liked that book, too. After all, it has Prof. Lupin in it, and I like Prof. Lupin. :) The traveling back and time thing was a little hard to wrap one's mind around, though. :P (I'm a very literal person and am rarely satisfied unless something makes good logical sense...which time travel just doesn't. Haha!)

Good point. You might as well pick a favorite and skip having to deal with the awkwardness of thinking up an answer on the spot. :P I would do that, too, if I could, but well...I just CAN'T. ;) Heehee. (I'm so decisive, it's ridiculous!)

      Delete
    5. Yes, I notice the little twerps. ;P Those parts are so frustrating!

Time travel is a sticky business to be sure. I can't say I'm satisfied with the theory myself. When reading books that involve time travel I either think it's to simple, or it gets to complicated and I zone out. Haha. There is no balance for me. :D With the Potter books, I was really frustrated with the whole time travel thing because if it had been used for every time we had to save a life... I'm just saying... It's probably the biggest loophole in the story for me.

Oh, haha. I wasn't giving advice, I was telling you why I am naturally focused on picking favorites.

      Delete
    6. Oh, I agree. It's very hard to make time travel work without leaving loopholes. Because, really! If they can use time travel to fix things ONE time, why can't they use it EVERY time? ;)

Oh, of course! Haha. That's good to know, because I hate to disappoint people by not taking their advice. ;)

  10. Ooh, I want to join the Sir Percy Fan League!! I love the casting for Emma Watson, but Tom Hiddleston just doesn't seem to fill Sir Percy's shoes for me (of course, I don't think I've ever seen him act, but . . . ).

Really, hmm, maybe you would get a taste of Tom Hiddleston's acting skills in Return to Cranford.
