Not so long ago while watching both Anne of Green Gables and Anne of Avonlea with some friends, I was reminded of a characters forgotten virtues. As this character is sometimes looked down upon for their meddlesome mannerisms I thought it was a situation that ought to be recalled. Therefore, I give you another side to Rachel Lynde.
Okay, everyone remembers Matthew's gifted dress for Anne. His fumbled trip to the store and investment in many items he didn't need. However, what isn't as well remembered or known is how that dress truly came about. In reality, Matthew left the store without being able to purchase the dress because of his surprise at having to deal with a female clerk. Poor Matthew. But still determined in his pursuit he sought out the only other woman he trusted, Rachel Lynde. It was Rachel that was entrusted with the task of both purchasing the material and making the dress up. A project that Rachel willingly undertook and accomplished under Matthew's direction for puffed sleeves. So you might say, that in her own way, Rachel Lynde was a kindred spirit. :)
Yours truly,
Cordy

Don't misunderstand my moderating. I am trying to contain and avoid unsavory comments and spammers. This does not include those who disagree with me, only those that are unable to state their disagreement agreeably. I have already said that I would enjoy different opinions.
So please, do comment!
P.S. I don't mind comments on old posts. :D

The movies portray Rachel Lynde as a caricature without depth, a caricature of her worst aspects. The book Mrs. Lynde is much nicer.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't go so far as to say the movie version has no depth. I only believe some of her other traits aren't as easily defined in the films. I think that's just the fault of films in general. In many ways, the books will always be better.
DeleteAww. This is so sweet. I'd forgotten all about Rachel Lynde's part in getting Anne her dress. That is so cool! And what a perfect choice for a "Forgotten Scenes" posts. Love it. :D
ReplyDeleteIsn't it wonderful? I love it!
DeleteThanks. :)
I had forgotten that! (shame on you, MovieCritic) Thanks for the reminder!
ReplyDeleteOh, dear me. No shame, surely. We can't remember every lovely detail of everything now can we? ;D I'm glad you enjoyed the post.
DeleteOh I love this!
ReplyDeleteYes! I actually love that part; I was sad they felt they had to change it in the movie. I really like Rachel Lynde in that part; it shows off her good heart. :) Love this choice!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Rae!
