Easy to Wed {Romance, Comedy}

I haven't reviewed a vintage movie here on the blog for ages. Allow me to acquaint you with a recent find.

Easy to Wed is a film made in 1946 starring Van Johnson, Lucille Ball, Esther Williams and Keenan Wynn

When a newspaper mistakenly publishes a false story labeling a tycoon's daughter Connie Allenbury (Esther Williams) a husband stealer the paper is faced with a serious lawsuit that will only lead to the paper's doom. So, a countersuit must be created or the fictitious story must be executed. Naturally, Warren Haggerty (Keenan Wynn) chooses to concoct a scheme to prove the stories accuracy.

Involved in his plot is his once enemy Bill Chandler (Van Johnson), who is given the task of not only becoming a married man but then allowing himself to become the object of Connie's eye and interest to create a scandal. Having now the husband, a wife is required. Of all people, the ever-sensitive Warren selects his own fiancee, Gladys Benton (Lucille Ball), to step into the role. Much to Gladys' irritation as Warren has been dodging their union and now to be swapped in as another man's wife. The nerve!

So the players are in place and the game commences. Using all of his charms Bill begins to become close to the aloof and standoffish Connie. Spinning tales of majestic duck hunts and aiding the Allenbury's in avoiding 'unsavory' society company are just a few of his talents. Using these and other expert abilities attained from previous experience as a ladies man, Bill works his way into Connie's good graces. However, that is after some time of wondering who is actually playing with whom. Then, of course, the mistake of sharing some honest truths about her is committed. This proves to be a dreadful error as that opens the door to admit real feelings of affection on both sides.

Oh me, oh my! What is to be done with a man who is wed to a woman who is actually his pal's gal and a girl perhaps too cool to overlook the truth that will surely be discovered?

Now, haha, behind all the flowery word I used to excite interest remains a movie that I found thoroughly and surprisingly delightful. The costumes are enviable (I think I may have said that before about costumes but as it's still true, I'll keep it), comedy that is clean, a scene that includes singing a musical scale while "quacking" (seriously had me laughing out loud. It's one of those scenes where you don't know how the actors kept their expressions neutral.), a haphazard hunting trip, a sweet romance, a rollicking romance, and of course a confusing but altogether happy ending.

Do tell me, have you seen Easy to Wed?

Yours truly,
Cordy

  1. This sounds quite entertaining. Hilarious even. Though, wow, what a mix-up. How ARE they going to get everything straightened out?? :)

    Excellent review, Cordy!

    1. It really is the strangest little comedy. But I guess that's what makes it a comedy. Right?

  2. I admit I could not follow the plot of this at all, but I'm intrigued nonetheless! :D It sounds delightfully funny and confusing. ;)

    1. I remember being puzzled in the movie but I didn't know how puzzling it really was until I decided to write this review. Trying to make sense of the plot has to be part of the comedy aspect of the film. So, I do apologize if I royally confused you. :D

  4. Hi Cordy! This sounds like a type of movie I would love, especially when a person want to forget about school. When I see Lucialle Ball in anything, I am automatically hooked because I know I will laugh and enjoy myself. :)

    1. HI EKATERINA!!! How have you been?
Eh, school is that bad? Sorry. But yes, hopefully this movie will work some kind of magic for you. And Lucille Ball is great in this film! She doesn't have a large enough role, in my opinion, but she does REALLY well with the time she's given.

    2. Well, college is not that bad, but precalculus is pretty bad. The first part of the semester wasn't too bad but now I realize why I've never liked math. It also takes time away from other important classes like English and anatomy. Thankfully, I'm also taking a voice class, which I really like since I love singing. :)

Although I have mostly seen Lucy on her TV shows, I enjoy watching her in movies. Have you seen "The Long, Long Trailer"? That's another funny movie!

    3. UGGH! Precalculus?? No thanks! Haha, math and I have always had a love/hate relationship. If I understood the concept I caught on fast but when I didn't--I NEVER got it. *deep sigh* Hooray for Ekaterina's voice classes!! :D

You've seen the "Long, Long Trailer"?! No one knows the LLT! Yes, I've seen it and it is hilarious!

    4. Yes. Thank goodness for voice classes! :-) Thankfully, it's getting close to finals. As a warning, I'll probably leave the blogging world until that's done, so I can have enough time to focus on everything. I feel kind of bad, but when I'm stressed commenting on blogs is the first thing I give up.

Yes! I have seen the LLT!!! It is hilarious! I know. It's kind of sad not everyone knows about that movie because it is really good.

It's hard for me to find a lot of classic movies. We don't have cable but when we did, we watched TCM a lot! That's how I was able to watch the LLT. Have you seen any other movies Lucialle Ball has been in. I once saw a movie, "The Dark Corner" (1946), where she played as a secretary in this film noir. That was interesting. Also, have you seen "Ziegfeld Follies." She is in the opening number of that movie, and she is also really interesting in that film. Those are two films where she did not play comedy, so it's interesting to see her in those type of roles.

    5. Good luck with your finals!! :D I'm sure you'll do well!!

We used to have TCM but it comes and goes with our cable package. I'm not sure how that works. . . I believe I saw the "Dark Corner" once but it's a vague memory at this point and I've heard of the "Ziegfeld Follies". I've seen her in "Yours Mine and Ours" which is pretty funny and another movie called "Miss Grant Takes Richmond". Of the two "Yours Mine and Ours" is funnier but the other is funny in a more obvious way. If that makes sense. Haha.

    6. I love "Yours Mine and Ours"!!!!! I have seen that movie so many times, my mom has grown sick of it, (not completely, but almost completely.) That makes sense how "Yours Mine and Ours" is funny in an obvious way. I have to see "Miss Grant Takes Richmond." I'm sure I will love it since I love anything with Lucy.

    7. Isn't it hilarious?! It's one of my great grandma's favorite movies so I've watched it many times with her. :D
