Math used to drive me insane (it still does if I pay it too much mind). When it did, I would just start writing the problem out bigger, I'd make my scratch paper so sloppy as I scrawled across it determined to move forward with the problem. With no one watching (which is key), I'd doodle, trace, and scribble as much as needed until I'd conquered the thing. Once the battle was won, looking at that destroyed paper would give me a strange satisfaction that I can't achieve any other way. :)I think the same principle can be applied to writing. There is a strange power in physically writing. The paper isn't watching you, it doesn't care at what speed you're going, it doesn't care how you write, it doesn't care what you're saying. It's only there to be used so you can see your thoughts spread clearly before you. It gives your thoughts someplace to be besides the inside of your head. (Where they bounce around like a legion of enraged ping-pong balls.) In short, I think writing is a math problem for your soul. All you have to do is keep writing until you've solved it.

And then, somehow, it was not nonsense."

I can relate to this post. When I was a teen, if I was angry with someone, I would write out a big, long, ranty letter to them about all the reasons I was mad. And then I'd rip it in tiny pieces and throw it away. And I felt better.
ReplyDeleteAlso, love that quotation from Sabrina <3
I've done that many times myself! It's exactly the sort of thing I'm talking about.
DeleteParis is always a good idea. ;)
I found myself in Paris. A friend said that :-)
DeleteWhoooaaaa
ReplyDelete*saves this to my brain*
Math drives me insane, but same, if I can doodle and scribble and scrawl until I get it, I can get it eventually.
Seriously, my key cure for writer's block is turning Caps Lock on and typing anything that comes to mind, and it usually comes back to something that will help me move forward with the story. And then I cut and paste the block of all-caps writing into a comment for future reference if necessary, and keep writing! Same idea, I think.
Anyway, just wow, I love this. It's perfect. Thanks. :D
Yes, same idea. If you just get writing then eventually you'll actually be writing. Haha. I love how you use Caps. That would be helpful because I just start babbling and then have to go back and find all the nonsense I inserted. :)
DeleteSure. Glad you liked it.
"(Where they bounce around like a legion of enraged ping-pong balls.)" A PERFECT description. Well put. :)
