Fictional Favorites, Couples Edition: Rebecca and Ivanhoe

Last year I included a controversial couple among my posts, and I thought I'd better carry that tradition forward. I'm aware there are those that don't agree that Rebecca and Ivanhoe should be a couple but I'm, obviously, here to disagree. Though, this probably isn't going to be the post you think it is... Let's begin anyway. ;)

I had never "shipped" a couple until I read Ivanhoe. (And I haven't since, Ivanhoe.) I'm not sure what everyone's definition of "shipping" is but for me, it means you're rooting for a couple that may or may not end up together not that you're loving a couple that is already together or does end up together. So I knew how the story of Ivanhoe went before I read the book because of an abridgment I'd read earlier in my life. Therefore I shouldn't have been so disappointed because as a rule, I'm fine with trusting an author and their treatment of their characters. But I was wrong. I was still very let down by the conclusion of the story on a romantic basis. However, it's not that I fault Sir Scott. On the contrary, his story is perfect when it comes to authenticity. He remained historically accurate, I'm just bummed he didn't stretch reality for this little plot. Ok, I really have to refocus on the couple here otherwise, I'm going to descend into a conversation about reality in stories and that's a tangent for another post and my other blog.

Alright, I love Rebecca because I can relate to her. She's confident in her beliefs, is talented in what she does, and has a quiet, yet powerful strength. I'm still working on my confidence, talents, and strength but I still connected with her. ;) Because of that, I sympathize with her affection for Ivanhoe. He was passionate in his own beliefs, strong, and had interest in her welfare. Also, should mention he saved her life. That's kind of a BIG deal. Yes, she saved his first, but if someone was my champion, to save my life in such an extreme situation, and while still injured, I would be hard pressed to keep my emotions from running away with me. I mean, come on! Wouldn't you? So, this love I have for this character has made me wish she had a happy ending with the one she loved. Does anyone understand what I'm saying? Besides the fact it would defy the broken social norm, Rebecca loved Ivanhoe and I think he did love her in return which probably confused him because he believed himself to be so attached to Rowena. Rowena isn't a bad character and isn't a bad choice for Ivanhoe. (The movie depicts her as such, which is frustrating, but not the case. The ladies are different, that's all.) We've all wanted the best for the characters we favor and Rebecca is one who deserved a happy ending in my opinion.

In conclusion, this video--it gets me every time! I wasn't a huge fan of the movie except for the last scene. Um, excuse me while I sprint for the tissues. Shall I snag a few for you? I think this song is perfect for this pair so enjoy.

Pretty simple post, right? Thoughts?

Yours truly,
Cordy

P.S. I really need to buckle down one of these days and do an entire post on Ivanhoe. (That's almost what this post turned into but I contained myself.) I loved that book!

  1. It's been FOREVER since I read Ivanhoe, but I absolutely loved Rebecca, and I wanted her and Ivanhoe to be together. But also I liked that Sir Walter Scott stuck to what was realistic (I guess I feel like if he'd just gone with "happy endings for all, at any cost!" it might have cheapened the story? idk) and the tragedy honestly just made Rebecca an even more loveable character. But I agree so much that she deserved a happy ending. Ahh...I'm so conflicted now!

  2. Mom read Ivanhoe aloud to us when I was a teen, so like well over 12 years ago? I've seen a couple versions since including the BBC one at least twice. I felt like I tried to re-read it, but I don't think I did. I just don't love Scott (except as a poet). And I didn't care for any characters in my memory. I need to re-read this as an adult, so I can understand where everyone is coming from!

  3. You should read the junior fiction book Knight's Castle by Edward Eager because ::spoiler alert!:: Rebecca and Ivanhoe get together in it. Also, it's hilarious. Also, it's short, so you could knock it out in a couple hours.

  4. Huh. Yeah, I've never shipped Ivanhoe and Rebecca, but I have always thought that they would have gone well together.

  5. I have mixed feelings about Ivanhoe and Rebecca. I think because in the film version I watched it just annoyed me so much that Ivanhoe could be in love with two girls at once, and constantly flipping back and forth between them. I dislike fickle loves, and that's how it comes off to me in the movie. (I think I remember the book being different though. Does Ivanhoe actually fall in love with Rebecca in the book, or is it more that Rebecca falls in love with him?)

Anyhow I can't discuss it too well because I'm not familiar enough with the story. It's been a long time since my dad read the book to us.

That video though!!! Ouch. That is SO sad. As a stand alone it definitely makes me sympathize with Ivanhoe and Rebecca and want them to be together and happy.

  6. (Apologies that this comment is kind of late!)

I don't ship Rebecca and Ivanhoe, but I like watching the dynamic of their relationship as it plays out, if that makes sense.

However, that music video makes me think I might reconsider were I to watch that film version! I've only seen the 1997 miniseries with Ciaran Hinds (which is really good, by the way), but those two actors seem to be well-matched. Hmm. Interesting stuff. ;)
