End of Summer Look | And Update on Me

"The first week of August hangs at the very top of summer, the top of the live-long year, like the highest seat of a Ferris wheel when it pauses in its turning. The weeks that come before are only a climb from balmy spring, and those that follow a drop to the chill of autumn, but the first week of August is motionless and hot." ~From the prologue of Tuck Everlasting
Okay, I've had so much happen in my life lately I'm reeling just a wee bit. But it's a much better "reeling" that I alluded to at the beginning of the summer. ;D So here's my new look, how do you like it? I don't think I've done anything like it, and even though I'm recycling my header, it just works. *shrug* But anyway, here are a few things that have happened to me over the summer.

  • I got a haircut. I actually haven't had short hair in an eternity, or five years whichever you prefer. On a whim, I decided I was done with just getting trims and I took about eight inches off my hair. It felt and still feels fabulous! Short hair, I HAVE MISSED YOU!! :D
  • My brother got home from his two-year church mission and we've loved being all together as a family again!
  • I saw Incredibles 2 and I liked it as a sequel though I still like the first one better.
  • Okay, at the beginning of the summer, my mom treated me to a shopping spree at Barnes and Noble and I picked up a few cute editions of Frankenstein, The Essential Grimm Fairy Tales, Jane Eyre (a better reading copy because I did have a Jane Eyre but not one I could really curl up with and pack around with me), and Tale of Two Cities. Also snagged a really cute picture book titled, Not Quite Narwhal.
  • Now, have any of you read Frankenstein? I kind of want to know because if I do a post, I would need to know if I'm talking to an audience who knows what I'm talking about or has no idea. (And I'm not promising a post because my ideas are still running wild.)
  • OH, GUYS! I saw Avengers: Infinity War. I can't do this, guys! I just can't! Why am I doing this readers, I ask you?! Crazy Cordy.
  • I have officially read The Blue Castle and it is a masterpiece. Seriously, I swallowed it in a day and now I'm only wondering what took me so long. I'd heard several bloggers had read it and I hadn't heard any negative reviews, so what was my problem? I haven't been so delighted with a book in a long while. As in, I can't remember the last book I gave five stars to...(it was probably Lord of the Rings.) Anyway, if you haven't already, you might want to give it a shot.
  • My 4th of July was nice and explosive. I hope yours was the same in your own ways. A few days after the 4th, I went to a local baseball game and there was a firework show at the end. So even though the team lost, there was a sweet firework show! :D
  • I've read a whole mess of books lately, and as I haven't had a solid reading summer for a few years sooo... I'm quite proud of myself. :D Tuck Everlasting is one of the books I've enjoyed lately. (Thus the quote.) I don't remember being especially fond of the movie but I've wanted to read the book. Once I saw how small it was, I knew it wouldn't take me long. (I think it took three hours to read.) It's a really beautifully written book. The writing is quite charming. And for a children's book, it almost made for a better read for me than a child. I don't think a child would care for or even understand the problem at hand.
  • I've read the Ascendance trilogy and boy did I have mixed emotions there! Sheesh! I wish the writing itself was better, because the storytelling and the characters (while at times both were a little on the unrealistic side of things), were strong. Particularly the characters. (By the way, yes, Natalie, I read these because of you.)
Well I know I have more to say but I must be honest, I haven't any more time. So until the next update post, enjoy these last few weeks of summer. <3

Yours truly,
Cordy

  1. A Tale of Two Cities is one of my favorites, we'll have to talk when you've read it!
I have never read or seen or had anything to do with Frankenstein and probably won't just from what I've heard about it. Is it good?
Have you heard of Tuck Everlasting the Broadway Musical? It's pretty good, coming from someone who's never read the book or watched the movie. The song Time is so sad!

    1. Indeed, I'm hoping to get to it in the fall.
It is really good, but it's NOT for everyone.
I've heard of it but I've never seen. Oh, something heartbreaking, eh? I will have to search it out. ;)

  2. (Not sure if my comment went through -- the screen went blank when I published it. If it did, then please disregard this one.)

I'm SO GLAD you loved The Blue Castle!!! It's one I inhale too -- it demands to be read as quickly as possible. Even for re-reads.

I've read Frankenstein, and I like the idea behind it, though I'm not a big fan of the book itself. I liked Kenneth Branagh's film version. It's not that I dislike the book, it's just not one I love, you know?

    1. (You're safe, only one comment went through. So thanks for re-commenting. Haha.)

Oh, it has to be one of my favorite surprises of the summer!! I was hoping I'd enjoy it and then ended up adoring it!! :D <3

I totally see what you're saying. That's why I'm waffling on a post. I just don't know if I'd be able to articulate my thoughts well enough. That's a well known struggle of mine so...it's a legitimate fear. ;)

    2. I'm trying to convince a sister-in-law of mine to read The Blue Castle right now. I know she'll love it too.

Sometimes writing posts where I'm just working through my thoughts on something difficult end up sparking really great conversations and helping me understand stuff better. Just sayin'.

  3. You got a haircut?!! How fun! (You must send me a picture. I want to see what it looks like! :))

YAY!! YOUR BROTHER'S HOME!!! So happy for you! It must be great to have him around again.

Oh, you read The Blue Castle? Nice. I read that one last summer. It's not my absolute favorite L.M. Montogomery book (Jane of Lantern Hill still holds that place), but it's still an awfully sweet story. Isn't Barney the best? And Valency is such a cool heroine. Their love story is adorable. <3 <3

    1. Indeed I did. I'll have to see if I've got a good picture or not. Haha.

      It's been so nice!! <3

Yes and I really adored it!! It was an instant favorite! I have Jane on my to-read list and I hope to get to her soon! :D
