Gosh, where to begin...well, how about the unexpected...
I really like Jo and Laurie, which might seem like a strange choice if you misunderstand what I love about them. I don't 'ship' them as a couple. (I don't ship anybody.) But I do really like their friendship, particularly how it is portrayed in the 1949 Little Women starring June Allyson as Jo and Peter Lawford as Laurie. My favorite scene between them would probably be when Jo finds out that Laurie has sent for Marmee because of Beth's sickness. It's just so sweet between the two of them. Oh, and I guess I like when Laurie comes back from Europe with Amy as his wife and goes to tell Jo while she's up in her garret. And then there's the scene...I should stop now!! Haha!
The next two will be more favorite friendship moments...
This may be difficult for some of you to understand and others will get it right off. Star Wars, anyone? I really appreciate this moment between Obi-Won and Padme. Obi-Won, while having to keep an eye on his padawan with mega temper issues, has worked his way over to Padme to check on her. It's one of the few things I like about the prequel movies.
I don't know if I should give warning or not but, if any of you are planning on seeing The Battle of Five Armies and have not yet done so--this will be a little spoiler! Okay, this entire scene in BoFA is pretty awesome with the music, action and such, but as usual, Cordy, had to overthink a scene and find something to like that is almost entirely aside from what you're supposed to pay attention to. *small shrug* Galadriel has spent all her strength in banishing the Necromancer/Sauron to Mordor and is incredibly weak. Enter Elrond, who helps support and almost comfort her in her weakened state. Simple enough right? (I didn't go to deep, did I?) It's just one of those details that I love. :) Again, not a couple situation, I think Galadriel is Elrond's mother-in-law. *goes to check* Yup, he is. :D
I'll stick to Middle Earth here for a moment with these three gents. This threesome is a very serious brotherhood (haha), and they always have each others backs. By extension, the hobbit foursome are also, very close. I have to keep this one very short or it will become novel size in record time! (Why, because my explaining oft times needs explaining. ;))
My, one thing leads to another as we have another brotherhood. The Captain and Kit! They joke and train together but the Captain also takes good care of Kit and later Cinderella. I went into this a little bit in my Cinderella review.
Well, as I am trying to write some post that aren't incredibly long and overthought, I feel like sometimes my dear readers require a tent and enough food to last for several days when you come visit my blog, I think I should just wrap things up here. Obviously, this is hardly a complete list! It is merely a collection of the random friendships and scenes that came instantly to mind while I was considering my topic.
What are some of your favorite fictional friendships?
Yours truly,
Cordy
P.S. Okay, I actually can't help including Anne and Diana. We'll call them honorable mentions because, I mean, they are the ones that coined the phrase 'bosom friends', right?!

"(Why, because my explaining oft times needs explaining. ;))" Haha! I feel like I get very long-winded in my posts, too. Really, though, this post was by no means too long! I could have read a lot more. :)
ReplyDeleteLaurie and Jo: Yes! Their friendship is so sweet. I especially like it in the book because there's more detail.
Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli: I love their friendship. It's so cool how they become a threesome. And of course...you can't forget the hobbits!! They're the best! :D
Lovely post, Cordy!
Well...that's good to know. :) I enjoyed doing this post so I will have to do another one sometime. Besides, as I said, this is hardly a complete list.
DeleteYes, agreed. The books are always better than the movies! But have you seen the 1949 Little Women? I think they do a better job of including Laurie and Jo's friendship.
I can NEVER forget the hobbits! (If I ever do, someone should check my temperature for I'm sure I would be deathly ill!) Heehee.
Thanks, Miss March!
Oh, yes, I've seen it. In fact, we own the 1949 and the 1994 versions of Little Women. I like things about both of them, but am not fully satisfied with either. (Call me picky. I am.) Sometimes the 1949 Laurie seems too old to me, but you're right that movie does give us a nice picture of their friendship. (Like when Laurie is chasing Jo down the road! Or when he walks into the room and the first thing out of his mouth is, "You look like a porcupine!" Haha!) I do wish someone would make a longer Little Women sometime, though. There are so many good parts in the book that never make it into the movies.
DeleteHaha! "Dealthy ill." You're too funny, Cordy. :)
Don't worry, I'll be picky with you. We own both versions too, but I'm not entirely satisfied with either of them myself. :) I do feel like I might like the 1949 version a little better because of June Allyson...but you probably could have guessed that at this point. :) You named the other scenes that I was going to mention in my post!! Yes, I just like that version. :) But I'm with you. Why don't they make a faithful movie?! It's not as if they haven't made extremely long and detailed movies before. And Little Women isn't that long. *small sigh*
Delete:D
I do love Jo and Laurie's relationship (but Professor Bhaer is perfect for Jo, and Amy is perfect for Laurie), but my favorite fictional friendship of all time is Fezzik and Inigo from William Goldman's The Princess Bride. They're adorable together! (Using "adorable" very loosely indeed.) The whole rhyming thing is ingeniously creative!
ReplyDeleteAhh, I see!
DeleteAnybody want a peanut?
Jo and Laurie and the Captain and Kit!! Yes indeed. Anne and Diana, OF COURSE. ( Poor Gilbert, doesn't he have any close friends?:))
ReplyDeleteSome of my favorite fictional friendships are William Wilberforce and William Pitt in Amazing Grace, Darcy and Bingley ( "Then I have your blessing." "Do you need my blessing?" "No. But I should like to know I have it anyway."<3) Elizabeth and Jane Bennet, Aragorn and Legolas, Merry and Pippin, Gandalf and Bilbo, and in Persuasion, I really like the comradeship between Admiral Croft and his wife Sophie. Oh yes, and the brotherhood thingy of The Scarlet Pimpernel.:)
Great post, Cordy! I really enjoyed it!
~Rilla Blythe
I'm sure if a I went back to the books I could find a friend for Gilbert but one doesn't come to mind at the moment. :(
DeleteI LOVE that scene between Darcy and Bingley!!!! HAHAHA! I thought of mentioning them in this post but I decided to save them for another! Haha, I thought of the League of the Scarlet Pimpernel as well. It is certainly clear that I have another post of this nature coming in the future.
Good! Thanks for sharing some of your favorites too!
~Cordy
I LOVE ALL OF THESE! These are such faithful friendships... It's so beautiful! *happy sobs* :')
ReplyDeleteGreat post, Cordy! It was not long don't worry ;)
Thank you, Fawnabelle!
Delete(And I just handed you a digital tissue for your happy sobs.) :D
You forgot Frodo and Sam!But great job anyway!---Liah
ReplyDeleteOh, no! Never forgotten! Just saved for another post! :D
Delete~Cordy
oh,okay!:-)---Liah
DeleteObi-Wan!! And I LOVE the Captain and Kit's friendship :)
ReplyDelete:D
DeleteJo and Laurie are such great friends!
ReplyDeleteBut wait...you don't ship ANY fictional couples? At all?
Oh! I love that scene too. :) Obi-Wan is just so much better than Anakin...you kind of wonder why Padme didn't fall for him instead. ;) But yes. Such a sweet moment easily overlooked in a dramatic scene.
Yup...Legolas, Gimli, Aragorn. :) They're so great!! And the Captain and Kit..yes, I like this list a lot. :)
(I didn't read the TBoTFA ones because I didn't want the spoilers, heehee!)
I feel like the term 'ship' is meant for couples that aren't already together. As I only watch/read things that have the couples journey already arranged and mapped out, I don't feel like I need to ship anybody. I don't know, does that make sense? It's just a strange term to me. Perhaps if I knew the definition of this fandom created word, I might ship and not even know it. :) Haha.
DeleteOh, so much better!! Haha, but I think Padme would know that Obi-Wan wouldn't return her feelings. I believe that he was more involved with the Jedi way and their rules than Anakin ever was.
You should get some kind of 'spoiler avoidance award'!! :D I have a terrible time trying to avoid spoilers!
Thanks for your comment. :D
Oh okay, haha, I understand what you mean. :) I don't know the "exact" definition of "ship" (if there even is one haha) but I take it as just wanting two character to be together-even if they do end up together. But your definition works too. :)
ReplyDeleteVery true. Obi-Wan was definitely more committed to the jedi way.
Haha! Well I'll take it if there is one. ;) I usually try my best to avoid spoilers, although I have ruined things for myself at times-sometimes on purpose but most of the time by accident. -sigh-
