Fictional Favorites: Strider/Aragorn

It is difficult to express everything there is to love about Aragorn. It really is. It was his character that really started my love for Lord of the Rings, as I have already mentioned. So instead of doing what would prove to be a rambling post I will use Tolkien's words to describe Strider and his journey to become Aragorn.

As Strider
"Suddenly Frodo noticed that a strange-looking weather-beaten man, sitting in the shadows near the wall, was also listening intently to the hobbit-talk. He had a tall tankard in front of him, and was smoking a long-stemmed pipe curiously carved. His legs were stretched out before him, showing high boots of supple leather that fitted him well, but had seen much wear and were not caked in mud. A travel-stained cloak of heavy dark-green cloth was drawn close about him, and in spite of the heat of the room he wore a hood that overshadowed his face; but the gleam of his eyes could be seen as he watched the hobbits."
"...As Frodo drew near he threw back his hood, showing a shaggy head of dark hair flecked with grey, and in a pale stern face a pair of keen grey eyes."

Acting as the King
"'You forget to whom you speak,' said Aragorn sternly, and his eyes glinted. 'What do you fear that I should say to him? Did I not openly proclaim my title before the doors of Edoras? Nay, Gimli,' he said in a softer voice, and the grimness left his face, and he looked like one who has laboured in sleepless pain for many nights. 'Nay, my friends, I am the lawful master of the Stone, and I had both the right and the strength to use it or so I judged. The right cannot be doubted. The strength was enough--barely.'"

Challenging the Mouth of Sauron
"Aragorn said naught in answer, but he took the other's eye and held it, and for a moment they strove thus; but soon, though Aragorn did not stir nor move hand to weapon, the other quailed and gave back as if menaced with a blow."

Yours truly,
Cordy

  1. Ahh! Yes! ARAGORN! Nice selections, Cordy. :) I like the part about the stone and how Aragorn had the right to use it because it belonged to him...also the strength he showed in taking the step to reveal himself to the dark lord despite the difficulties of such a measure.

    1. They did a fairly good job at showing this part in the movie but the book version makes it sound so much better!! :) I wish I could have written the rest of the scene but that would have been to long! Hehehe. I agree with everything you said...but by this post...you might have already guessed that. ;)

  2. ARAGORN!!!!!!!!!

Ahem. Sorry. :) If you can't tell, I really love him. And the sections you highlighted are perfect! Tolkien created one of the BEST heroes when he created Aragorn. I just....words fail me. I'm so glad you love him, too! :D

(Because of my love for Aragorn, I relate to Eowyn's character very much. Heehee. But, despite that, I am a firm believer that Aragorn belongs with Arwen. Thank goodness Tolkien thought so, too! :D )

    1. *ahem* if not THE best!! :) I totally understand the love!! ;D

Yes, haha, on both counts. I can relate to Eowyn while at the same time going with Arwen all the way! It helps that Eowyn gets Faramir. I'm just sayin'... ;)
