I hope you didn't think that I had forgotten my "Lord of the Rings" posts! Here is Arwen.
Arwen is a mind over matter kind of girl. In the movies, I'm sorry I keep bringing them up but for a lot of people that is their only Lord of the Rings reference, Arwen saves Frodo and bravely defends him against the Nazgul. Not the case in the books...let me explain!
In the books Arwen is a craftswoman. She is not a fighter in the physical sense but rather a fighter in a knowledgeable sense. In the books it is actually Arwen that forges the sword Narsil for Aragorn. Because Arwen is skilled and knowledgeable in not only the workings and magic of people but also in the history of Middle Earth she is able to discover a way for her to help in the battle for the freedom of Middle Earth. Arwen, understanding the situation at hand then went about using what skills she had learned from her people to bring about something that could be used in the battle. As such, Arwen did not have to wield a sword, not that she would have been unwilling to do so, but rather she took a different approach to the task at hand. There were fighters, now there had to be those who could craft and eventually rebuild what had been destroyed.
Like Arwen we need to strive to develop our talents in their many forms. There are those who are compassionate, there are those who are crafty, there are those who are smart and there are those who are caretakers. I remember being shown a list when I was 16 years old that listed the many 'talents' that one person can have. I was amazed at what was considered a 'talent'. I had always thought that talents were simple things like, sewing, cooking, photography or organizing. But really there are endless possibilities for what are considered 'talents'. Talents are simply the ability to create something whether it's a smile, dress, or care for another. Here is a video that I think fits this post well.
You may ask what is so important about understanding our talents or 'creating' something new and I will tell you. There are enough people out there trying to destroy we need more people that are trying to create. I personally, love to cross-stitch, and crochet as well as write and do nature photography. They are things that make me happy and they are ways for me to 'escape' some of the worries and concerns of this day and age. I was taught how to crochet from my grandma, who has now passed away. I don't have many happy memories with my grandma but I cling to the memory of that afternoon spent with a hook and thread. Learn the talents and skills of your 'people' or family. They will be willing to teach you and you will be better because of it.
And lastly, before I let you go, I want to urge you to learn about the world around you. Not just the world on a global scale because you will easily become discouraged. Just start by understanding your own community and maybe even just start in your own home and move out from there. That is where the change needs to take place.
Thank you for reading! And enjoy your day!
Yours truly,
Cordy
For those of you who missed Eowyn you can read hers here.

I love Arwen in the movies, and I wish we could have more of her in the books. But I'm not complaining about what Tolkien did include;) I think her slight mysteriousness in the books adds something to the story, as it's something only certain characters know. And then, of course, hers and Aragorn's story in the Appendices is so good:D
ReplyDeleteLovely post! I like how you pointed out Arwen's scholarly and "crafty" aspects:)
Oh, you like to crochet, too?! I quite enjoy it myself:D And that is such a beautiful legacy, that you learned from your grandmother.
Thanks Olivia!
