The Stratton Story summary from Amazon:
"Chicago White Sox pitcher Monty Stratton is an affable long drink of water with an easy, whiplike delivery and a pitch so unhittable the young phenom racks up consecutive 15-win seasons. But Stratton's greatest victory doesn't come on the manicured green diamonds of our national pastime. James Stewart portrays Stratton, who loses a leg in an accident just as his career is on the rise...and whose triumph over despair and disability leads him to pitch again. Stewart signed on for the role when he realized the film would be an inspiration to injured World War II GIs. The film still inspires. Awarded an Oscar for Best Motion Picture Story, directed by Sam Wood (The Pride of the Yankees) and supported by a top cast that includes real-life ballplayers, The Stratton Story is sports biography at its best."
I have mentioned, at least once or twice, that I love June Allyson. I only discovered this movie of hers a few months ago and it is already a favorite. There isn't to much that I can say about it after the little Amazon summary because it's just that, a summary. I'll just do a little bullet pointing and end with that.
- Love the pairing of June Allyson and Jimmy Stewart! (Their first pairing, in case anyone cares.)
- Lovely acting by everyone involved really. (Of course, there is at least one corny scene that I can think of.)
- Favorite scene (spoiler moment!) is when Monty learns to walk again with his baby! It's a beautiful scene!
- It's a baseball story
- Love the reason that Jimmy Stewart signed on to the movie
Oh, one last thing. If you would like to watch the trailer, you can click here.
Yours truly,

I LOVE this movie!! It's rather lesser known, I think, so it's exciting finding others who have seen it too! :) Ah yes, the learning to walk scene is so sweet. And I love June Allyson's character. It's so nice seeing a inspiring wife and mother in movies. :)
ReplyDeleteOn the whole, "old" movies just tend to be better than newer movies, script and story wise. Of course, there are exceptions. ;) What do you think?
Here I was writing this post to introduce people to 'vintage' movies and you have actually seen it. Three cheers for Natalie! I love the role of June Allyson's character as wife and mother as well. :)
DeleteI'm in love with 'old' movies. They put what is coming out of Hollywood right now to shame! The plots and scripts do seem superior to me as well. With the same amount of time you can get twice the story while watching an 'old' movie rather than a 'newer' one. And there are exceptions...there are good and bad in both categories. What are some of your favorite 'old' movies, actors, and actresses?
Yes!!! Oh, SO glad you agree! I love talking about "old" movies. :) I think at least 75% of my family's movie collection is made of old movies. About that, anyways!
DeleteSome of my favorite actors are Gregory Peck, Dana Andrews, Jimmy Stewart, Cary Grant, Errol Flynn....actresses are Audrey Hepburn, Jean Arthur, Ingrid Bergman, Olivia DeHavilland, Teresa Wright. And there's more but I'll keep this comment relatively short. ;) Some favorite movies are "Only Angels Have Wings", "Roman Holiday", "The Best Years of our Lives", "Father Goose", "The Pride of the Yankees"....oh my. Shall I go on? haha
What are some of your favorite movies, actors, and actresses?
I have seen at least one movie with each of the actors you named...except Errol Flynn. I LOVE Gregory Peck! Actresses, I haven't seen anything with Teresa Wright. Have you seen Ingrid Bergman in Anastasia? That's a really good one.
Delete"Father Goose", good choice! I wish "Roman Holiday had a happy ending!
I just published my favorites page if you want to go and check it out. It's at the top of my blog right under my title. But in case you don't...
I love June Allyson! I really like Celeste Holm particularly playing opposite Frank Sinatra in "High Society". (But "High Society" isn't really a fav.) She does a great job in "Gentleman's Agreement". Grace Kelly.
I like Cary Grant and I like Gregory Peck.
Movies: "A Country Girl", "Call me Madam", "I Was a Male War Bride", "Casablanca"...and many others.
Yes, I have seen Anastasia! It's been awhile though, and to tell the truth, I didn't exactly care for it too much that time. :) Maybe if I watch it again I'd think differently.
DeleteAww, I know, right? I'm always very sad at the ending of Roman Holiday...I like to think that they get reunited later on and marry. :)
I haven't seen any of the movies you mentioned except for Casablanca-I do like that one! I'll have to check into the others! And yes- I will definitely check out your favorites page, thanks for telling me! :D
My sister wasn't a fan of Anastasia either so it's not just you. I like how 'he', can't remember his name (and I probably wouldn't be able to spell it if I did), helps Anastasia remember who she really is. But what I probably like the most is the reunion scene between Anastasia and her grandmother. I watch the movie mostly for that moment. :)
DeleteA Country Girl has Grace Kelly, William Holden and Bing Crosby. It is a different role for Grace Kelly but I'd be interested to hear you thought should you ever watch it!
Call Me Madam, is just a little musical that I like with Donald O'Connor and Vera Ellen.
I Was a Male War Bride is a Cary Grant and Ann Sheridan movie that is HILARIOUS! Oh my stars, it's great!
Casablanca was the first Humphrey Bogart that I watched that I thought actually 'fit' him. I had previously seen him in African Queen and I was like, who on earth is this guy?! I was totally confused. :) But Casablanca is good isn't it?! (My sister didn't know the ending and was more or less furious with me for not telling her before we watched it...oops...:))
I'll have to watch it again sometime. I honestly don't recall most of it. :)
DeleteThose all sound good-especially I Was a Male War Bride. My family loves old comedies, especially Cary Grant ones. He's great! :) We're currently watching His Girl Friday...it's pretty hilarious!
Yes, he totally fits Casablanca! I didn't like The African Queen either. haha
Oh, dear, hahaha, I hope you sister forgave you! :D
Oh, yes! Watch Male War Bride! It's awesome! His Girl Friday is pretty good as well.
DeleteAnd I was mostly forgiven...it's getting that trust factor back that is the trouble now. Hahaha. :)
Okay! I definitely will sometime. :)
DeleteHahaha, I understand. ;)
