Pride and Prejudice: The Forgotten Scenes

1980's Pride and Prejudice
Now, what could I possibly be thinking by starting this post with that ^ as my starting picture? I will absolutely, 100%, admit that this is NOT my favorite version of Pride and Prejudice. (How many of you actually knew what movie this picture was from before I told you? Hahaha.) I think, at this point, that I have seen every version of Pride and Prejudice and there is still only one that I will continually watch. (Want to wager a guess?) However, I do have to own that it has two things that I love very much. I wouldn't say that these scenes were enough to warrant a redeeming quality in this version of Pride and Prejudice, it's just that I like that for once my scenes were remembered!

I won't trifle with your poor nerves any longer for I'm sure you are all dying to know what scenes were left undone in the SIX hour 1995 version of this classic. Right, of course you are.

The first scene I would like to draw your attention to takes place in chapter 10. (I thought I would tell you so that you might read it for yourself as I have NO intention of typing the scenes out.) It takes place at Netherfield, while Jane is ill Lizzy is staying as something of a companion and nurse to her sister. Lizzy is being forced, for courtesies sake, to spend her evenings with the family. Miss Bingley is 'honoring' the company with some music when Lizzy is surprised to find that Mr. Darcy has asked he for a dance! (If you doubt me then you should go and read chapter 10!) I have gone back and forth as to whether or not I would have liked to see this scene actually acted out. I was almost persuaded that it would not have worked because of the acting in the 1980's version but still. I do like the scene very much.

Another 'favorite' finishes off that chapter...but you will have to read that one for yourself.

Now the other forgotten scene, that the 80s version covered or at least attempted to cover, was the way that Lizzy and Darcy became engaged. Or more, how the family came to know about it. Even the 80s version isn't exactly how I would like it but they did make an effort. I love how Lizzy tells Jane and Darcy tells Bingley. Bingley the next day already acts in the position of teasing brother by arranging for another walk for Darcy and Lizzy so that they might be alone. When Darcy does go and tells Mr. Bennet I love the way that Darcy tells Elizabeth to go and see her father.

But I find that I have rabbled/gushed about my favorite and forgotten scenes for long enough now. I won't write all of the problems about this version as it is hardly considered as the favorite among any Pride and Prejudice fan that I know of. (Now if it was the 2005 version, rest assured, there would be ranting!)

I will leave you now with this little dose of Mr. Darcy in one of my favorite scenes that was actually included in the 1995 Pride and Prejudice.

"I am not afraid of you". ~Mr. Darcy

Your truly,
Cordy

  1. Hee! I now LOVE the '95 P&P, but I grew up with the 80's version (and still own/enjoy it) so I absolutely recognize your first picture and the scenes you outlined. ;) Very fun, indeed. (And incidentally, I love that blue dress of Lizzy's.)

    1. Hahaha, I can't imagine that I would like Pride and Prejudice as much as I do if I had grown up with the 80's version. I just can't take it serious for most of the movie. But it did highlight some great scenes! :)
(And I like the blue dress too.)
