I have to set the scene a little bit because it's far too long to type it all. Marianne, for 'one reason or another' has been giving special attention to hunting season and those who might be participating in the sport. Edward soon discovers why.
Sense and Sensibility
Chpt. 18
Isn't it perfect?! For all the grief Marianne gives Edward, he is a very smart fellow and can even tease when needed! It's probably just me, but this scene is a favorite. What do you think?""I wish with all my soul," cried Sir John, "that Willoughby were among us again."This, and Marianne's blushing, gave new suspicions to Edward. "And who is Willoughby?" said he in a low voice to Miss Dashwood, by whom he was sitting. She gave him a brief reply. Marianne's countenance was more communicative. Edward saw enough to comprehend not only the meaning of others but such of Marianne's expressions as had puzzled him before; and when their visitors left them, he went immediately round her and said in a whisper, "I have been guessing. Shall I tell you my guess?""What do you mean?""Shall I tell you?""Certainly.""Well then, I guess that Mr. Willoughby hunts."Marianne was surprised and confused yet she could not help smiling at the quiet archness of his manner,..."

Edward is such a bright soul. How Austen could craft such diverse and real characters is a (jealous) mystery to me but I'm glad she did.
ReplyDeleteYou have a lovely blog, Cordy!
I agree! I'm always grateful for talented people! Haha.
DeleteOh, why thank you, Miranda Jo! :D
Hehe, I remember that scene! Too bad it isn't in the movie :)
ReplyDeleteOh, and LOVE the new blog look!! :D
A great pity to be sure.
DeleteThanks, Blessing!!
Sense and Sensibility! THAT'S what it was! *smacks forehead* I knew that second quote you gave me sounded familiar. (I still don't remember the "peaches and strawberries" one, though? Who says that?) I'm disgraced! How did I fail to guess this??
ReplyDeleteAnyway...let's move on.
THIS SCENE! I LOVE THIS SCENE! Seriously, it is one of my favorites, too! :D I've always wished they could have included it in one of the movies because it really gives you a deeper glimpse of Edward's personality. And yes! Isn't it wonderful? He can tease! Haha. (I love guys who can tease.) Also, I think this scene is so cool because it gives you a feel for how close of a relationship Edward has with the Dashwood family. He fits right in. And he would definitely make an awesome brother-in-law. :)
Excellent, excellent post, Cordy! Thanks for sharing. (And for satisfying my curiosity after you worked it up to a feverish pitch. That was good of you. ;))

"Is love a fancy or a feeling--or a Ferrars". But now you see why I couldn't complete the line.
DeleteI'll admit, the "peaches and strawberries" is difficult. I have certain phrases that if I EVER hear them, I'm hearing them in a character's voice. "Peaches and strawberries" is in the scene where Margaret comes to sleep with Elinor because she thought there might be wolves. A little known scene, with little to no consequence, but if I ever hear peaches or strawberries, I'm hearing Margaret mutter about them.
It's such a small scene, couldn't they have worked it in somewhere?? ;D
Thank you, Miss March. (Hehehe, I do what I can. ;))
~Cordy
Ah! The "peaches and strawberries" line is from the 2008 movie, isn't it? That's why I wouldn't have recognized it. I've only seen that version once. :) Yes, I can definitely see why you couldn't finish that other line. ;)
DeleteI know, I know! How hard could it be??
~Miss March
Aww, that's so sweet! I didn't remember this scene very well, but it's super cute. :)
ReplyDeleteI know, right?
DeleteYESSSS!!!! I know! I loved that scene and laughed so hard! It took me a minute to realise what he meant, but when I did, I laughed. Dear Edward. You seem so sweet and shy--and you are--but you certainly CAN tease. :)
ReplyDeleteAnd this is the scene that made me decide Dan Stevens' Edward is far superior to Hugh Grant's! ;)
ReplyDeleteOh, haha, I fell in love with Dan Stevens as Edward from the first moment I saw him! ;D I can appreciate Hugh Grant's performance, but he is far too stiff in the role as a whole.
DeleteSo sweet! I'm so glad you posted this. It's really one of the most darling little exchanges in the Austen books, in my opinion.:)
