I think there are different levels of satisfying endings to stories. Don't you think? There's the sweet revenge, there's the comic relief, don't forget the melancholy conclusion, and then of course the total surprises. But I'll have to cover some of those another day because this month is the Lovely Blog Party so the focus in a lovely and dramatic one. Therefore, I have collected four scenes that I consider "melt-worthy". And let's just be clear, "melt-worthy" to me, is when you're left grinning, maybe goofily, purely satisfied and left believing in love again after watching one of these scenes. I wouldn't want any of you believing you're going to end up like the puddle of green goo that used to be the Wicked Witch of the West. That's simply the wrong kind of melting. So, now that we've cleared that up, because I know you all misunderstood my term ;), let us begin. Oh, but one more thing, in case you are in any doubt, as I am talking about endings, there are going to be spoilers...so read with caution if you're unfamiliar with any of these.

Four Melt-worthy Endings | Lovely Blog Party
~Sabrina ~
1995
Let's just preface this by saying, your heart takes a long, hard, beating getting to the happy ending moment of this movie. Oh my stars! It is rough there for a painfully long time. But I think that might be why you're to the melting stage by the time you get to the final minutes of this film. So the scene I'm referring to is when the battered, tired, confused, Sabrina has returned to her beloved Paris. Almost as a starting over point for her again to find happiness for herself, when Linus steps from the shadows. For yes, there are deep heavy shadows as this takes place during a deep shadowed night in a quiet Paris. Our girl is startled, skeptical, but dare I even say a little hopeful as Linus pleads his case finally ending with a comment she'd made to him before she first left for Paris, proving that he noticed her more than she'd realized. I'm not doing it justice but it leaves me ever so happy!
~Ever After~
1998
Her relief is rather how I feel during this scene. I'm just now questioning if suffering to such a degree as these first two picks are required to truly enjoy these endings. (I feel like Ron, "so you're gonna suffer, but you're gonna be happy about it.") Anyway, I have to set the scene, Danielle who got into this snarled mess because of the actions of others and through no fault of her own has thankfully taken the reigns and freed herself only to find out that the Prince, a man who didn't do her any favors the last time they'd met, may now punish her for her actions yet again. Thankfully, that is not what takes place. Though the prince finds that the damsel is not in the distress he first feared, she is still in distress and it is his fault. Henry, rightly, begins to apologize for his actions. My favorite part of this scene would have to be when Danielle has him repeat her name. Where other women might have made a man grovel or beg, Danielle was simply pleased to just be acknowledged as who she was rather than return the harshness she had received from the prince. This leads so a heartfelt proposal, a joyous acceptance, and the rest is cinematic history. It's soooo good!! Heart eyes and all I tell you!
~The Parent Trap~
1998
Quick side note before I dive in, this is shot up close and personal I would have been busting a gut and would have been very hard-pressed to finish the scene because, wow, I need some personal space. Alright, I've had my moment, now we can continue. There are lots of little details, added purely for drama, but they are handled properly that I simply love them! Again to set the scene, there is a very melancholy goodbye, made more so because of rain, a terrific downpour in fact that adds to this dramatic farewell. The drama continues to build as we discover that grandfather is not there to greet the travelers returning home but rather those people they just left on the other side of an ocean. Overcoats, dramatic reveals, rain still continuing to pour, leads to a swelling of appropriately dramatized music and a very sincere kiss and a new life started. I LOVE IT! :D
~While You Were Sleeping~
1995
Wow, am I a 90s girl or what?! Hahaha. I didn't realize how close these all were. ;D Okay, honestly, Jack Callaghan is a trooper, why? Because he was able to propose in a very personal way while having an audience. And I'm not talking about an audience of strangers of being in a public place, oh no, he has his entire family looking on. Wow, but I kind of gave away the whole setting the scene pattern I had going there. How they managed to make a proposal between two people seem so sweet while having a family tag along is rather genius. It just illustrates how well Jack knew Lucy because Lucy didn't just love Jack, she'd fallen in love with his family too. (Well, the family worth loving...Peter needed some work...obviously.) So that thoughtful gesture and a very unselfish one too to involve the family. I can't get enough of it. It certainly wouldn't be for me...heavens no...but it was peeeerrrfect for Lucy and Jack. <3
And there you have them. Be sure to tell me some of your favorites in the comments. I'm off to carry on with my party business.
Have a lovely day!
Yours truly,
Cordy

I got goosebumps reading your description of the ending of Sabrina. It's so Cinderella-ful and tentatively hopeful, and then full of joy at last. I love that movie so much.
ReplyDeleteEver After is one of those practically-perfect-in-every-way movies and now I just want to sit down and watch it. I think my kids are almost ready for it, actually, so maybe soon?
And yeah, While You Were Sleeping is also a near-perfect movie. And the ending makes me laugh and cry at the same time, which is so special.
Hmm. Other favorites I can think of, where the ending is exactly this sort of thing emotional caramel-and-chocolate perfection, would be Austenland, Ten Things I Hate About You, You've Got Mail, and the first Rocky movie. Oooh, maybe Angel and the Badman too.
I can still remember the goosebumps I got when I watched it the first time. I LOOOVED it! And I still do! :D
DeleteIt really is!! <3 <3 <3
