Alright, in trying to keep things fresh and aiming for something new during this party I came up with an idea of comparing what would be regency era men to who they would be now in what is considered the rom-com category. Wow, this seemed much clearer in my head. Maybe once I just get into the meat of the post, it'll clear up a little. Fingers crossed anyway. Here goes nothin'. Oh, but also keep in mind, these are loose comparisons.
Edward Ferrars = Jack Callaghan
(Sense and Sensibility & While You Were Sleeping)
Both of these guys are on the shy or reserved side. And also find themselves loving women that are seemingly out of reach. Both of them aren't the best at expressing themselves and both of them have professional aspirations that do not match their family opinions. (Although the one has a hilariously quirky family and the other a downright dreadful one.)
Mr. Darcy = Joe Fox
(Pride and Prejudice & You've Got Mail)
I think this is the best comparison that I have. And I'm probably not the first to make it. Mr. Darcy, a man of means, Joe Fox, isn't hurting for money. Both find themselves loving someone that initially drove them crazy and who they argued with. But in the end, both decided to make some changes in their lives because of those women.

| I don't think Joe agrees to the comparison. ;) |
Mr. Bingley = Every Hallmark Man Ever
(Pride and Prejudice & Hallmark Channel Movies)
Mr. Bingley is a good soul, but he is to easily swayed by other opinions. So just as Hallmark men question everything about their relationship with their leading lady if someone mentions any potential road blocks and they dive right into doubt. Niiiice. *brief eyeroll* They also all seem to always have very bad family influences most of the time, but they are usually all nice fellows, like Bingley.
Frank Churchill = Steve
(Emma & The Wedding Planner)
What is it with engaged men playing like they are unattached? even for a brief time?! And what's worse, defending their actions! I mean really. Get your act together already. Of course the outcome of their behavior is very different for these different movies. Although they both get the girl they really preferred. How lucky for them...
Mr. Thornton = Linus Larrabee
(North and South & Sabrina)
I love these two, both of them. I think these two had to step up for their families and never knew how to step back and take care of themselves. And both of them end up falling for women that were skeptical and none to kind at times, to say the least. But eventually, a happy conclusion is achieved, thank goodness!
So there's my little line-up. What do you think, did I hit or miss the mark? What are some comparisons you've drawn?
Yours truly,
Cordy
Mr. Bingley = Every Hallmark Man Ever. Poor Mr. Bingley, lol.
ReplyDeleteI didn't care for You've Got Mail, but from what I remember the comparison seems apt. Actually, I didn't care for or didn't finish most of these modern rom coms, but I do like some modern rom coms, I think . . . I just tried While You Were Sleeping, that sort of lying situation always freaks me out, I just quit, but I think I will try again, lots of people seem to like it, this is the 2nd recent blog post I've read after I "tried" it. Clearly they are signs, lol.
These are good comparison. I think you did a good job.
ReplyDeleteI've always thought Mr. Thornton is much like Mr. Darcy but with less pride and less certainty, maybe. But Mr. Thornton is a little more realistic about life but only because he had suffered more than Mr. Darcy.
I can't make any comparisons but mostly I prefer not to compare anyone because I don't quite know characters as well as other people.
Have a lovely day.
Joe Fox and Mr. Darcy are very similar whether they like it or not, lol! That is one of my favorite rom-coms. I really like the comparison of Mr. Thornton to Linus Larrabee! I would never have thought of it, but it is so accurate! I haven't seen any of the other modern films, so I'll take your word for it. From the few Hallmark movies that I've seen the guys do seem to be like Mr. Bingley, haha!
ReplyDeleteI was *JUST* thinking today how similar some aspects of North and South and Sabrina are. Especially the two male leads. Great minds think alike!
ReplyDeleteThe rest of these, I can totally see, too.
What a clever idea! You're pretty spot on with Joe Fox and Mr. Darcy!
ReplyDeleteThis is such a creative post idea; I love it!
