Heidi, at Along the Brandywine, is hosting a Cinderella week and I couldn't resist signing up to review a few of my favorite Cinderella retellings. Do go and check things out at her blog.
Slipper and the Rose...ohhh, how to begin? This version of the classic fairytale is a feast for the eyes. It is gorgeous in every respect!
As I don't know how many of you know or have seen this version of Cinderella I suppose I should start by mentioning two men that some of you might be familiar with. The music for Slipper and the Rose was done by the Sherman Brothers. Some of you might have heard of them if you have seen Saving Mr. Banks. (An incredible movie by the way.) These guys:
For those of you who are curious, the Sherman Brothers are also known for: The Parent Trap, Summer Magic, Mary Poppins (obviously), The Happiest Millionaire, Bedknobs and Broomsticks, The Tigger Movie, and many others! With such a line-up how could the music be anything but amazing? Should I give you a sample?
Well, that was a lovely introduction for our Cinderella who is played by the beautiful Gemma Craven. Her voice is gorgeous and she is so naturally pretty. See?
I guarantee that I don't look this nice with smudged cheeks and after a day in the kitchen. :)
Now, we have our Cinderella so now we need our prince...
Above is Prince Edward, played by Richard Chamberlain. Not my favorite when it comes to looks I'm not going to lie. However, I do still like his performance as Prince Edward.
(I'm finding that writing reviews are difficult to do without revealing to much or perhaps to little.)
Recently, Slipper and the Rose was released to Blu-Ray! It has been such a treat to watch the version restored and in vivid color.
It's worth watching for the ball alone. What think you of a lime green wig, or perhaps you would prefer a lovely pink or purple? :)
Cinderella herself, is just delightful and I love the dance with the Prince.

| Can you see the sweet roses tucked artfully into her hair? |
Slipper and the Rose sets itself apart from the other adaptions of this classic by containing the realism that would have come if the Prince of a small kingdom had married for love rather than advantage. This aspect makes for interesting twists in the movie. :D
For a few teasers, there is a scene involving a swing, there is a fantastic and sensible ;) fairy-godmother, absurd hairstyles, a darling dog, detailed dresses, breathtaking scenery, and entertaining dances...one of which happens in a crypt...

| Yes, I'd be peeking too. :D |
So, are you interested?! Have I said to much? Have I revealed to little?!
I've got to run,
Cordy
P.S. There is a bonus to this post...you can find the entire film on YouTube here. The color isn't as brilliant as the Blu-Ray disk but you still get a marvelous idea. :D
P.P.S. Also, this makes my first post in 2016! Wahoo!

I have never heard of this film before, but it looks lovely! I may try it on youtube. :)
ReplyDeleteObviously, hahaha, I highly recommend it! :D
DeleteThis sounds like a good movie! I will totally check it out!
ReplyDeleteSaving Mr Banks!!! I love that movie!
I'm glad I'm not the only person that looks at the fashion and the scenery in movies lol XD
Great answers! Can't wait for another one! :D
I hope you do! It is one of my favorites which means I want to share it with everyone!
DeleteIsn't it a wonderful film?! It's incredible!
Haha, sometimes my 'noticing' every little detail, in fashion and scenery, will drive my family a little crazy. :) But yes, I still notice!

P.S. "Baggines, what is a Baggines, precious?"
It's nice to meet you Fawnabelle Baggins! How did you decide on your name? :)
I have been rewriting The Hobbit on my blog and I added myself in the story so I made a name for my character. It took a while but I got it! I wanted a spin-off of Belladonna, the name of Bilbo's mother, and I wanted something to do with animals or plants. I was going to write it Faunabelle but it looked better as Fawnabelle XD
DeleteIt was a pleasure introducing myself! If you would like to read my blog, the address is: myadventuresinthehobbit.blogspot.com
I love visitors so please check it out! ;)
Hahaha. Oh, now I understand. :)
DeleteYour blog sounds like fun! I will have to check it out sometime. Thanks for sharing!
What lovely pink and blue sparkles, and altogether Cinderella-ish-ness on your blog/sidebars! :)
ReplyDeleteAnd lovely review -- I'm so glad you were able to do it! I own the blu-ray edition and actually just recently watched all the extras: including interviews with the Sherman brothers and also the entire casting story for Gemma Craven. It was fascinating. She's such a lovely Cinderella. And her singing... especially on "Tell Him Anything (But That I Love Him)" is breathtaking. Prince Edward's singing is pretty excellent, too. His "Why Can't I Be Two People?" is so catchy. (Though I think "Protocoligorically Correct" and "He Danced With Me" has to take the prize for keeping me awake at night. ;P)
And you included mention of two of my favoritest moments! That crypt scene never fails to make me laugh. They're just. so. crazy. I can't help it. And the short moment when she's running down the steps and her hair and gown are changing... sooo amazing!
Thanks again for the beautiful review!
Thank you!
DeleteOhhh! You own the Blu-ray version?! Happy day! She, Gemma Craven, is a gorgeous Cinderella! I love the songs you mentioned and I played with the idea of introducing the music with "Tell Him Anything (But Not That I Love Him)" but I didn't want to give to much away. :) As for most catchy, for me, it would have to be "Position and Positioning".
I love the crypt scene to much to leave it out! And as I love the staircase, the falling rose petals, the ivy walls, and Cinderella herself, I had to include something about that scene!
I'm glad you approved. :D Thanks for dropping by, Heidi!

I want to watch this now. The end.
ReplyDeleteWONDERFUL review, Cordy! It's really whetted my appetite to see this. I hadn't heard of it before this week, but I will definitely have my eye open for it.
YES! That was my goal!
DeleteYou've definitely made me interested in seeing this! The pictures you included are lovely.
ReplyDeleteHaha! "I've got to run"...and that gif! FUNNY!! :D
Oh! The Sherman Brothers! I love their music! (Saving Mr. Banks is such a good movie, isn't it?)
Very nice review, Cordy!
~Miss March
Why, thank you! After all, I was head of scenery...oh wait... :/
DeleteIt was rather cheesy of me, I'll admit, but I couldn't resist. The gif is so pretty.
YES! 'Saving Mr. Banks' is a fabulous movie!
You're too kind, Miss March. :)

Ooh, very nice review. I have never heard of this movie, but I am definitely going to have to make a point to watch it soon, because it sounds delightful!
ReplyDeleteI hope you do!
DeleteIt is very delightful!
So good to see this review. I have been wanting to watch this movie for awhile. Now i want to watch it even more!!!
ReplyDeleteI'm sure it would be worth your time! :)
DeleteAw, I used to love this film when I was little. I always think it goes on a bit too long, but the costumes are gorgeous and I love the fairy godmother!
ReplyDeleteI agree with you on all but one point. As the film is all so lovely, I don't think it goes on too long. ;) (It is a longer film though, so I see your point.)
DeleteI too love the fairy godmother and the costumes are some of my favorites!
I watched this for the first time last year, and I have to admit I didn't love it. BUT I think that when I watch it for a second time, I will like it a lot better, now that I know how they're telling the story.
ReplyDeleteBut I DID reeeeeeeeeeeally love the fairy godmother, and the reason for the magic only working until midnight was cool. And I'm fond of Richard Chamberlain, so I dug him in this role. I think my kids would like it a lot, so I'm thinking I'll show it to them some afternoon this winter. It's free for Amazon Prime members on Amazon's instant video service right now, which is how I watched it.
I hope you do like it a little better! It's one of my favs!
DeleteThe fairy godmother is great! :D But Richard Chamberlain isn't a fav and I only like him in this role. I hope your kids like it. It would be a perfect watch for a miserable winter afternoon. If it's a miserable winter afternoon they should love the summer scenery in this movie! :)
Do you mean you only like him, not love him, in this role? Or do you mean this is the only role you've liked him in, from the ones you've seen?
DeleteHaha, I have to admit, I don't think I've seen him in any other role. I'm not sure I know of movies of his that I would personally find enjoyable and/or appropriate. :/
DeleteI really meant he isn't really my favorite in the role of the prince. (As in not a favorite for looks.) For Cinderella retellings, I think there are better looking princes. Kit, being at the top of that list now. :D Haha. But I like his acting as the prince.
Does that answer your questions? :)
Gotcha! I must admit I've only seen him in a couple of other roles myself. One of which is The Count of Monte Cristo, which I loooooooooooooooooove and wholeheartedly recommend.
DeleteMy grandpa has been wanting me to watch that with him. It's the one with Tony Curtis in it right? Haha, an old Tony Curtis. :)
DeleteYup, that's the one!
